The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang wrestling team took on Morningside College on Wednesday, December 5 and won the match 39-4.
After taking nine out of the ten matches, the Mustangs improve to an overall record of 2-0 in dual matches.
Travis Borchert started the Mustangs out with a victory, taking the 125 pound match. Justin Reinsma followed Borchert up with another victory, winning the 133 pound match by earning a 2-0 advantage after taking down Morningside’s Nathan Ryan.
SMSU’s Ethan Hildebrandt claimed the 141 pound match with an early 3-point near fall. Hildebrandt went on to defeat Morningside’s Kevin Olson by technical fall.
Beau Buysse increased SMSU’s advantage to 17after pinning Morningside’s Taylor Phipps in the 149 pound match.
Cody Fritz edged by Morningside’s Jordan Langley in the 157 pound match. After a 7-4 deficit in the third period, Fritz fought back to tie the score at 7-7, then rallied to win the match with an 8-7 decision.
Jacob Begin defeated Morningside’s Chad Morehead with a perfect 8-0 decision. Begin would go on to take on Rulin Pederson in the 174 pound match. After nearly recording his fifth consecutive pin, Begin was granted a 3-point near fall and took the match by decision, 13-6.
In the 184 pound match, SMSU’s Travis Peralta took on Brian Block. Peralta took a 2-0 lead in the first period after a takedown. Peralta never looked back, winning in a 9-4 decision over Block.
Micah Larson earned the Mustang’s final victory for the night, pinning Morningside’s Chris Ridgeford.
