Five Nights at Freddy’s is a mascot horror game that has been around for over 10 years, as the first game was released on Aug. 8th, 2014. Since then, the media has exploded in popularity with 12 different video games, 46 books, and a variety of different merchandise. One area that it has most recently entered is the film industry.
The first Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie was released on Oct. 27th, 2023, with a dual release on the streaming service Peacock as well as in theaters. With a budget of $20 million, it saw a great return, seeing a box office amount of $297.1 million. With this success, it was bound to see a second (and eventually third) film.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was released on December 5th, 2025, in theaters with a budget from $36 million to a box office success with $220.6 million. The film stars the characters from the previous film in Mike Schmit (played by Josh Hutcherson), Vanessa Afton (played by Elizabeth Lail), and Abby Schmit (played by Piper Rubio). It also takes heavy inspiration from the second game introducing the Toy Animatronics as well as the Marionette who takes the role of the main antagonists for the film.
Overall, the movie played well for the core audience for the film, that being the fans of the games. With many different easter eggs, references, and characters introduced fans quickly adored this movie. However, this movie is not without its faults. The movie felt too much as a stepping stone to the third movie and lowered the quality of the second one by proxy. The world created an extremely interesting scenario with the Fall Fest event going in the background but had little to do with the overall movie. While the scares were much more effective compared to the first, and the quality of the animatronic suits (made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop) were once again top notch. The movie had little substance when it came to moving the plot forward.
If fans loved the first movie, they will love the second one just as much if not more so. If you are not a fan of the first one, I doubt the second one will change your mind on the series as a whole.
