Just because Anthony Neil Smith, SMSU English Chair, already had a few close calls with movie deals, doesn’t mean that he’s not open to more. Director Paul von Stoetzel pitched Smith the idea of a movie adaptation of Hogdoggin’ over Facebook. Smith’s hopes weren’t high until the contract was signed.
While the release date of the film set for spring of 2015, the book trailer is due out November 2nd. “The actors for the [book] trailer all volunteered their time to make it. Paul made good choices,” Smith said of the trailer actors. “A director can’t fully realize what I’m thinking the characters look like, but I think they are close.”
He said he tries to stay out of the process of movie making; he wasn’t fond of making decisions. “I’m interested to see how Paul [von Steotzel] will see the book. It’ll be interesting how he shows it.”
Even though Hogdoggin’ is the second in the Billy Lafitte series, Smith said he would rather have the movies done one at time than two in one contract. When asked if there were more movie deals in his future, Smith replied with, “Maybe.”
