November, a month of food eating, elections, countdown to finals, and writing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. The SMSU English Club created an event based off of the National Novel Writing Month’s Write-In’s. Even though the Write-In was inspired by the official gatherings that NaNoWriMo has, SMSU English Club expanded the event to more than novel writers.
Students gathered in the Walt Whitman Room, Bellows 218 with lap tops, notebooks, and snacks supplied by Professor Marianne Zarzana. In between lunch and busy class schedules, students came and went, some spending more time in the room than others. If the room was quiet, students were hard at work, writing away. Sometimes the room was alive with the chattering of writing and comparing word counts. Even Dr. Jim Zarzana showed up with his lap top toward the end of the night.
Dan Kilkelly, Creative Writing senior said, “It was good to be around a bunch of English Majors, and bounce ideas off each other. And it’s harder to get distracted with facebook.”
The event ran from 8 in the morning until 8 at night. The success of the first Write-In started talk of another Write-In for spring semester.
The English Club meets every Tuesday at 12:30 in Bellows Academic 218, also known as the Walt Whitman Room. If interested in joining or want more information about the club and events, find more information on their Facebook page, SMSU English Club.
