It was An Epic Reading that drew an audience on November 20. The students, four Creative Writing seniors, each read for fifteen minutes, sharing their best fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and even a rap.
Daniel Kilkelly started his reading by sharing that he found some of his most epic stories were non-fiction, based upon his family and their experiences. Kilkelly read two non-fiction pieces as well as a sonnet.
Rob Wedl, a Creative Writing and History double-major, read a short fiction story as well as a poem.
Tyson Tofte shared a fiction story about a Marine struggling with his military career, intimate relationship, and ultimately his time overseas. Tofte also recited a rap he’d written, also about military life, in honor of SMSU Creative Writing alumni, Nick White.
Ashley Kuhnau read a non-fiction piece that told the story of how she met her husband, as well as a story about her father, and a poem.
The seniors of the Creative Writing program are required to do a senior reading as a graduation standard. From their time at SMSU, they chose their best pieces they’ve written and compile a senior portfolio. From the portfolio, they then pick enough work to read for fifteen minutes.
