Super Bowl Sunday is all about the football. And the food. Mostly the food, actually. The football part wasn’t that exciting this year. Good thing we always make up for it with a buffet!
The Super Bowl has been intertwined with junk food so much that the two are near impossible to tear apart. Buffalo wings are as much a symbol of the event as an actual football. In fact, Residential Dining here at SMSU even had super bowl themed food the Friday before the big game.
Why not be a little unhealthy? That’s what holidays and special events are for. As Jim Gaffigan says: “I usually don’t have a burger, a brat, and a steak but… it is 4th of July. And I need the energy if I’m gonna start blowin crap up. It’s what the founding fathers would want.” It’s what the football gods would want.
Of course, with obesity on the rise in the United States, that kind of thinking is literally killing us. Odd that we would celebrate a completely physical event such as a major sports game lounging in recliners with a plate of mini-weenies and a beer.
It’s time to start questioning tradition. Just ask yourselves what your favorite sports players would think if they saw your belly hanging out of your shirt. They didn’t get ripped from watching TV. So maybe next year instead of all the fatty foods, you could celebrate the Super Bowl by getting a good workout the day before and then throwing together a healthy snack platter for the game day. Or not. Maybe you’ll build a mini stadium on your kitchen table out of deep-fried cheese curds and onion rings, and then devour it with a few of your closest friends. But it wouldn’t hurt to cut back a little.
