The William Whipple Gallery was the site of the latest senior portfolio reading for four creative writing students: Laura Bania, Amber Carlson, Ashley Nyren, and Chloe VanDuinen. The title of this reading was ‘I Swear it’s Not About You,’ since creative writers so famously write about real people and events.
The first reader was Laura Bania, reading a piece called ‘Oversight.’ This story has been polished and revised through workshops and readings, and was even published in the Bare Root Review literary magazine. It tells the tale of a shiny red Ford that a family can’t possibly afford, and a little girl who just can’t stay out of trouble.
Amber Carlson was the second reader. She said her piece related to the overall theme, because “It’s not about you, it’s about me.” She read a nonfiction piece about her hunting with her father and brother called ‘Prize.’
The third reader was Ashley Nyren, who showed off the first half of a story called ‘The Angel of Longpoint.’ It was inspired by the Canadian band Tanglefoot. It was an exciting story of a shipwreck and a fight to survive a storm.
The last reader was Chloe VanDuinen. She presented a short story called ‘Lens,’ based on a prompt from a workshop, a grayscale picture of a sunset over train tracks. She also read three poems: ‘Don’t Panic,’ ‘Trickster X-5,’ and a nursery rhyme style poem called ‘Adults at Play.’
The final senior portfolio reading will be Wednesday, Dec. 5th. Look around campus for times and places!
