On Oct. 18, across the United States, there was a large protest against the current Presidential administration with the No Kings Protests. The No Kings Protests first started on June 16, with the protests first mainly being over how many see President Trump was going against the constitution to get more specific about the treatment of Hispanics being mistreated with the ICE raids throughout the nation.
With one of the many No Kings Protests happening in the backyard of many here at SMSU. Right on Main Street at Memorial Park, the head organizer, Kristi Blomme, has helped with other demonstrations at the same place as part of the Marshall Area Peace Seekers, and wanted to see a No Kings Protest that would not require many in the area to travel far.
“We found out that day that it was announced to have a November 18th rally or march, and we were wondering if anyone would be interested in starting one in Marshall because we’ve always had to travel.” Compared to the other demonstrations in the area, it well exceeded the group’s expectations, with more than 300 people showing up with brightly colored signs and even some in costume even some in costume. With all of this in mind to make sure there is a democracy that can hold the current administration in check.
“It’s [No Kings Protests] representing us all as a united group of people wanting to keep a democracy. We want to put down authoritarian government, we want our government to maintain our democracy, we want to go through congress for laws, we want to follow the constitution, and that’s why we say no Kings.” With no current plans or announcements at what is continuing with the No Kings style of protests, the Marshall Area Peace Seekers have continued to hold demonstrations on every other Tuesday at Memorial Park.
