For those of you who have been skeptics of the ever-popular, not to mention sparkly, vampire story, “Twilight,” the last movie might just have you jumping on the bandwagon rooting for Edward or Jacob…or possibly Renesmee.
Ever since Stephanie Meyer began writing the book series back in 2005, its popularity has risen – mostly with teenage girls and their moms reliving their youthful days through the pages of these books. Along with the release of the final novel, “Breaking Dawn,” in Aug. 2008, the first movie, “Twilight,” followed in Nov. grossing $392 million worldwide.
Each subsequent film – “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (2009), “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” (2010) and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” (2011) – have done significantly well at the box office, surpassing that of the first movie. “New Moon” garnered over $709 million, “Eclipse” $698 million and “Breaking Dawn Part 1” $712 million. “Breaking Dawn Part 2” continues the success of the saga at the box office with a total of $706 million thus far.
Though with success evidently apparent in dollar signs, the reception towards the saga has mostly been negative, with statements that the story is full of sub-par effects, bad acting and an even worse plot. The last movie was certainly the exception to these past judgments, with critics stating that it is the best film of the saga.
The audience is introduced to the new Bella – who they saw apparently dead and drenched in blood after giving birth to her and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee, in one of the final scenes. Yes, that’s right, she’s a vampire now and she’s deadly, graceful and strong to boot.
The film doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the humorous side, with Bella and Jacob fighting over “Nessie” and Jacob stripping down to his skivvies in front of Charlie, still unawares of Bella’s condition, to reveal himself as a werewolf.
Worried about the rapid growth of Renesmee, the Cullen clan as well as Jacob are desperate to find some answers and the process is rushed when the Volturi find out about it, believing Renesmee to be an immortal child – which is strictly against their laws.
Threatened, the Cullens start gathering witnesses for when the Volturi arrive, fearing of an attack before the truth can be revealed.
In the final showdown, a twist is revealed – surprising fans and critics alike. Unexpected deaths, a chase and a final shocker will have audiences reeling, while the ending satisfies fans around the world.
If you are a skeptic of the Twilight Saga, simply go see this film for its superb ending and judge for yourself.
