Many of you may have noticed the ceilings around campus. A lot of them are the typical type of flat ceilings that you would find in a home or office building.

However, in the lower level of the Student Center, as well as in the traditional dorm rooms, there are strangely shaped ceilings reminiscent of waffles.

For those unfamiliar with the structure of a waffle, they are essentially comprised of small boxes.

I first noticed these waffle ceilings when I came to SMSU four years ago. Since then, I have been doing intensive research, and have come to one conclusion: these ceilings were created for taller people.

As someone who is 5’4 max, the height of the ceiling doesn’t matter much to me. However, for those individuals who are not as short, these types of ceilings are both a blessing and a curse.

For the especially tall, this format could be a relief and a curse at the same time. It is one of the main findings of my research that for taller individuals, the pockets of extra space afforded by waffle ceilings can be utilized for a variety of things, such as taking a breath of fresher air and having phone calls in private.
