Politics are one of the many taboo topics that we as a society have chosen not to talk about. However, I believe that this is one of the many downfalls we have as a nation. I believe that having a base understanding of what is going on in the world politically is one of the most beneficial pieces of knowledge a person can have.
Politics, no matter what your race, religion, or age, are going to involve you, whether you want to be involved or not. Many people say, “I don’t want to get involved in politics,” many have chosen to ignore what is currently going on in the world. While having an extreme in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of our government would be helpful, I don’t believe we need to go that far for every single person.
Start by paying attention to the news when it is on and realizing what our government is doing. This can offer some potential insight into people’s living conditions such as why groceries are more expensive or why specific books are being banned.
I see knowledge as power, and being able to explain why the government makes the decisions it does is extremely important. There are politicians out there who choose to capitalize on the lack of knowledge and use that frustration to point them at groups who have nothing to do with the issue at hand. So being able to have a variety of different sources from different backgrounds to come to your own conclusion helps people understand what is going on.
Overall, politics changes people’s lives in many different ways. Being able to know why something happens can help alleviate people’s frustrations or help gather multiple different people to fix said problem. If, as a nation, we open up the discussion to politics, we can shape how politics works for us and make sure we won’t be taken advantage of.
