The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team defeated the Minot State Beavers in three consecutive sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) on Saturday, October 5 in Minot, N.D.
The Mustangs jumped to an early 10-4 lead, forcing the Beavers to take a timeout. The Mustangs extended their lead to 16-8, but the Beavers shortly cut the deficit to 17-15 after a rally. After battling back-and-forth, a kill by Whitney Burmeister handed the Mustangs the win.
In set two, the Mustangs handled the Beavers easily, picking up an early 6-0 lead, quickly increasing that lead to 12-4. The Mustangs kept up the momentum, winning the set 25-16.
In the third set, the Mustangs used a 9-point rally to pick up an early 10-2 advantage. The Mustangs kept up the momentum, winning the third set 25-17.
The Mustangs were led by Abbey Thissen, who recorded 13 kills on 26 attempts. Claire Sames followed closely with 11 kills on 30 attempts. Emilee Gutzmer led the Mustang offense with 37 assists. Rachel Westby led the Mustang defense with 17 digs.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 12-3 overall, and 7-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
