SMSU wheelchair basketball player Spencer Carver passes away

Former SMSU student Spencer Carver passed away Friday, September 7, 2018, in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Following funeral services on Saturday, September, 15, at New Covenant Bible Church: 3090 N Center Point Road, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Spencer will be buried at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Spencer is survived by his loving parents, Don and Beth Carver; his sister, Bailey (Tyler) Freese; his brother, Harris Carver, and many loving friends and extended family members.

Spencer was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Harry MacDonald, and Russell Carver. Spencer suffered a life-altering spinal

cord injury following a car accident in January of 2015. Through his dedication to gain

back his independence, Spencer showed how strong and brave he was.

After graduating from Prairie High School in 2016, Spencer attended SMSU for two years. While at SMSU, Spencer was a member of the wheelchair basketball team. His teammates remember him as always being a team player.

Coach Derek Klinkner said, “he [Spencer] was

always upbeat and willing to help someone out.” Spencer was very much a part of the wheelchair basketball family and will be missed deeply.
